Cool things to do in May in the Bronx
Find some of the best things to do in our Borough during the month of May!
When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out
All of May Thursday–Sunday, 1–7pm | 878 Brook Ave (at East 161 St and Third Ave)
No Longer Empty is pleased to present When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse. Built 1905–1914 and attributed to architects Michael John Garvin and Oscar Florianus Bluemner, the Courthouse, once boasting granite floors, lavish stairways, and bronze doors, remains adorned by a statue of Lady Justice. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Bronx County, the Beaux Arts-style building has been shuttered for 37 years.
The Old Bronx Borough Courthouse is taken as both site and theme: a time capsule, witness, and symbol existing within a plurality of narratives about its future role in the neighborhood. Referencing a quote by Beat generation poet William S. Burroughs, When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out echoes approaches attributed to cut-up poetry, early Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, and the sculptural practice of artist Gordon Matta-Clark, who sliced into urban spaces as social commentary. The exhibition will occupy three floors and include the works of 26 artists and site-specific works commissioned by No Longer Empty. Curated by Regine Basha for No Longer Empty

HAGIOGRAFÍAS
Saturday, May 2, 8:00PM & Sunday, May 3, 3:00PM | Pregones Theater
Hagiografías (Hagiographies) is a collage of theatrical vignettes which interculturally explores notions of sainthood. In the Puerto Rico of the 1940´s, two pilgrims (peregrinos) wait for a train in a ghost station. In New York, a vampire in a barbershop turns out to be a graffitero that kills and resurrects images of saints on the streets by painting over them. Chalk drawings and live computerized transcription materialize the story of Bhasmasura, the demon in India who aspired to reach a god. In a final episode, stories of saints´ lives, the meaning of names and the sense of an always disappearing home come together in the desert.
Hagiografías moves between English and Spanish (as well as other real languages and invented ones). Amid this aural panorama, the play is intended to be experienced and understood in different ways, depending on your relationship with these tongues.
With the collaboration of the actors-technicians: Alejandra Maldonado, Christopher Cancel Pomales and Suácer Marmolejos. Text and stage direction by Aravind Enrique Adyanthaya.
Hagiografías / Hagiographies is a workshop production of Casa Cruz de la Luna Theatre Company as part of Pregones Theater ASAP program.

¡GAYTINO!
Friday, May 9, 2015 8:00PM |Pregones Theater
¡GAYTINO! is a remarkable life journey from 1950s East LA to New York’s Great White Way in the 60s and 70s and back to Hollywood. A gay Chicano moves from the back of the bus to the front of American pop culture in this autobiographical play with music.
The solo piece is driven by Dan’s lifelong friendship with the late Chicano artist Carlos Almaraz and by Dan’s father, Chicano music legend, Lalo Guerrero. The 90-minute performance travels through decades of Mexican-American history and the gay experience from a unique and personal perspective. Touching, provocative, hilarious and absolutely one-of-a-kind, Dan Guerrero brings his two fascinating worlds together in a riveting solo show.

90's R&B Soul
Saturday, May 30, 2015 8:00PM | Concert Hall at Lehman College
IT FEELS GOOD
Featuring Mint Condition and Tony! Toni! Toné!
Mint Condition generated some buzz, but it wasn’t until Washington D.C.’s WHUR-FM (Howard University’s famed college radio station) broke the follow-up ballad, 1991’s “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” that the band experienced their first runaway smash. “Breakin'” peaked at number three on Billboard’s R&B chart and number six in Pop’s top ten, remaining on the charts for 34 weeks. After that, two other stellar albums—From the Mint Factory and Definition of a Band— and a chain of hit singles followed, including “Forever In Your Eyes,” “U Send Me Swingin,” “Someone to Love,” So Fine,” “You Don’t Have to Hurt No More” and “What Kind of Man Would I Be.”
Tony! Toni! Toné! Crashed out of their Oakland neighborhood in 1988 with their Gold debut album Who? Which spawned the hit “Little Walter”. In 1990, to both critical and popular acclaim, their second album The Revival garnered four # 1 Billboard hits including “Feels Good,” “Whatever You Want,” “The Blues” and “It Never Rains (In Southern California)” all went Platinum. Not to mention more hits like “Anniversary,” “Lay Your Head on My Pillow,” and “Slow Wine.”
