Notable Bronxite- Kerry Washington

You may know her from "Scandal",  Django Unchained, or Save the Last Dance, but did you know that Kerry Washington, one of Hollywood's leading ladies, is a native Bronxite?  That's right, Kerry Washington was born in the Bronx.

Born to a professor (mother) and real estate broker (father), Kerry was raised in the Jamie Towers Cooperative apartments in Soundview. She attended public school until she enrolled into the Spence School, an elite all girl private school, in Manhattan. After graduating in 1994, she attended George Washington University to pursue her degree in Anthropology and Sociology.

AStarWasBorn.com interviewed Kerry about her her favorite places in the Bronx, and here's what she had to say:

I love Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, which is the best that Little Italy has to offer, The new Yankee Stadium, The Bronx Zoo, the Bronx Museum of the Arts is pretty amazing and the Lehman College Performing Arts Center is great. - Kerry Washington

She has also been quoted as saying that she attended the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, which boasts other notable alum like Jennifer Lopez  and Ed Pinckney (former NBA player).  In fact, Kips Bay was not aware that Kerry was a member until she mentioned her involvement to the media. According to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club website Kerry emailed them in 2005 to express her appreciation while she was filming in Africa.  In 2007 she served as the Co-Chair to their 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Performing Arts.

Kerry has not shied away from her Bronx roots, and neither has she stayed away. We congratulate Kerry for breaking barriers and being the first African American woman to headline a TV series since 1974, when Teresa Graves stared in 'Get Christie Love'.

"Scandal" returns to ABC on Feb. 27th at 10:00pm EST.
