Lehman Center for the Performing Arts Presents: Don Quixote by the Russian National Ballet

Don Quixote by The Russian National Ballet

The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow in the late 1980s. This vibrant company is dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian ballet but to invigorate tradition with developments from around the world. Based on an episode from Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel, Don Quixote de la Mancha, the story follows its title hero, a middle-aged country gentleman absorbed with tales of chivalry, who sets out to defend virtue and punish those who violate the code of honor. With his servant Sancho Panza as his armor-bearer, he travels to Barcelona, only to mistake Kitri, an innkeeper’s daughter who is in love with a barber, for his dream-lover Dulcinea. A dance-packed feast of comedy, drama, romance, intrigue, betrayal and fantasy, Minkus’ rousing score endows each scene with rich atmosphere.

Tao has had hundreds of sold-out shows and more than a million spectators. The stars of TAO live and train at a compound in the mountains of Japan, reaching the highest level of virtuosity only after years of intensive study. The performers each bring nontraditional flair to the group by drawing on their diverse backgrounds: one as a hard rock musician, another gymnast, and yet another as a composer. They offer a young and vibrantly modern take on a compelling traditional art form.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts presents: Screen of Los 100 sones de Cuba/The 100 Cuban Sones,

Kicking off the 15th Annual Havana Film Festival New York, The Bronx Museum will host a screening of Los 100 sones de Cuba/The 100 Cuban Sones, followed by a special performance by Yunior Terry y Son de Altura. Music by DJ ASHO.

Winner of a Latin Grammy, Los 100 sones de Cuba/The 100 Cuban Sones follows the popularity and dissemination of the son musical tradition throughout Cuba. Using interviews with academic experts and community members, the film traces the familial and regional roots of this song style around the country and beyond. How has such a region-specific style defied borders? As one musician states with pride and happiness: "It's very authentic, and therefore it has been internationalized." Directed by Edesio Alejandro and Rubén Consuegra.

Free admission and bar (donations suggested)
