Bronxite- Anthony Mendez invited to State of the Union by First Lady Michelle Obama

Anthony Mendez last few years can be described in four words- from tragedy to triumph.  The south Bronxite's high school tenure was tumultuous. During his freshman year his best friend- Johnny Moore, was shot and killed, the following year his family was evicted from their Bronx home and were placed in a shelter in Brooklyn, making his commute to the Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports in the Bronx arduous. But these hardships did not stop Anthony. He soon became the first member of his family to graduate High School and is now a freshman at the University of Hartford, where he is on the track team.  

Anthony met First Lady Michelle Obama last summer after receiving his diploma, and tonight he will be one of her honored guest! 

Congratulation to Anthony for continuing to strive even while obstacles have tried to slow him down! 

The State of the Union will air tonight at 9PM.
